Five Minutes in the Bible for Men
Remember your Creator in the days of your youth — Ecclesiastes 12:1
Many of us depend upon our money, jobs, other people, or material things to make us happy and to bail us out of tough times. Others become dependent on drugs or alcohol to ease the pain of life. We all depend upon something to seemingly make us happy, if for only a short time.
My question is, “Why not depend on the only One who can give us eternal, abundant life and true satisfaction?”
Even in Solomon’s day they were trying to find fun, amusement, pleasure, knowledge, security, and love. They had the same quest for happiness that we do today.
It is recorded in Ecclesiastes 1:2: “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” Here’s the bottom line of what this verse is saying: “It’s all just a bubble that bursts.” Solomon was the Warren Buffett and the Bill Gates of his day. He had it all plus more. He had more material possessions than perhaps any other man in history. At the end of his life, Solomon said, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” — Ecclesiastes 12:1
Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. He set his heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. He perceived that this was like grasping for the wind. It’s all a bubble that bursts.
Even with all of Solomon’s wisdom, his mind could not bring him to salvation. Yes, our minds are very important, but we cannot think our way to God. We come by faith, and then our mind will support our faith.
By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one may boast. — Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB
Solomon had every pleasure — everything at the snap of his fingers. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines, hundreds of servants, and every exotic food from around the world. He could afford every sensual pleasure that one could imagine. Yet in the end, he said, “It’s all a bubble that bursts. It doesn’t satisfy.”
Men, what is our safety net to save us when we fall? If Solomon says that it doesn’t satisfy, what makes us think that we can find satisfaction in life without knowing God through Jesus Christ. We must step off the throne and place God on top. He is the only one that has eternal satisfaction. Paul says in Romans 1:16: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (NASB).
When we live this kind of life, we will have joy, happiness, and satisfaction. Let’s admit that our bubble will burst someday — where will we go for safety?
Prayer: Father God, help me to realize that all of my wealth, my toys, my stock portfolio will someday go up in smoke. Let me rest knowing that You are my shield and my protector. Amen.

Action: Put your faith into action. Make some eternal changes in your life.
