In 1993, Bob Briner penned a book titled “Roaring Lambs,” which challenged the church to leave its Christian subculture and impact mainstream society (including the arts and entertainment) for Christ. He urged Christians to be “salt and light” in the world and take an active role in shaping culture. One young lady attempting to do that is Stacie Orrico.

After releasing her long awaited self-titled sophomore release in March, Orrico quickly gained mainstream recognition as an up-and-coming R&B artist. Her video for the song, “Stuck,” has garnered airtime on MTV’s “TRL” (Total Request Live). Orrico guest hosted “TRL” and also made an appearance on NBC’s “American Dreams.” Although Orrico may have all the styling of a young pop icon in the making, she remains different as she desires to impact people — particularly teenagers — all around the world with her music.

Containing mostly rhythmic beat-driven songs, similar in feel and sound to other mainstream R&B acts, Orrico offers a blatantly different message. While “Stuck” expresses frustration over a floundering relationship, “Security” points listeners to a flourishing relationship with Jesus. Additionally, writing or co-writing eight of the 12 tracks on the album, Orrico covers topics such as moving forward after a failure, seeing the needs of others and hesitating to make an eternal decision. These are weighty topics for someone barely old enough to drive!
