Most of my life I thought worship was something we did at church. It was the singing we did just before the sermon. It seemed to me like it was one of the most boring parts of the whole service even though I loved music. All we did was sing a song standing up, and then sing a song sitting down. I didn’t understand much of what I was singing, and it certainly didn’t seem to be a very important part of church.

The Bible tells me I should worship God in all his majesty, but I had a confused idea of exactly what worship was. Certainly, when God commanded us to worship him, singing a couple of songs in church once or twice a week wasn’t what he had in mind. I began searching for something more that I could give to God.

If you are like me at all, I ask a lot of questions about life. I find myself wondering what God was thinking about when He made us. I wonder sometimes what our number one purpose on earth is, and why God made things the way He made them.

In Psalm 19 it says, “The heavens tell the glory of God. The skies display his marvelous craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or a word; their voice is silent in the skies; yet their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to all the world.”

Slowly but surely I began realizing that God made everything to show his glory. The Bible makes it clear that the mountains and the oceans and all the animals declare how awesome he is. Romans 1:20 says, “From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God.”

By its very existence, all of creation shouts aloud, telling us that God exists and how incredibly wonderful he is! Amazingly, we have the same job as part of his creation — a very special part.

Isaiah 43:7 says, “All who claim me as their God will come, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them.” And Revelation 4:11 says, “For you created everything, and it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created.”

I have come to the place in my life where I have embraced my greatest purpose – to worship God with more than a song; with my life – and to spend my life showing off my God through one of the most important acts of worship – obedience! So my song, “These Hands” is really my testimony. Everything on earth was created to point to God’s greatness, including me. What an awesome calling! And so I want to do my best to reflect his glory in the greatest way possible. I want to give God my life in worship – not just my hands, not just my heart, and not just my song – but EVERYTHING!
